SCOTTSDALE ARABIAN HORSE SHOW
|
 |
|
Well, we just flew in from the annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show last night (no, our arms aren’t tiredwe’re horseflies after all!) and our first personal experience with a show we have wanted to attend for over 20 years did not disappoint. Seems to us that the Presidential race is not the only hotly debated political contest: Despite being a shining spectacle with over 2500 horses competing in 10 days of incredible competition, thousands of spectators and vendors of all kinds, an undercurrent of controversy was palpable and spirits were sometimes dampened by more than the occasional rain falling over the Arizona landscape. There is an air of change at Scottsdale, one seemingly long overdue. This is the only Arabian horse show in the U.S. now that has not adopted the new European halter showing style and judging system which many are hopeful will finally stop rewarding questionable handling and judging practices. We hope that Scottsdale will move forward into the future by adopting the new rules that will remove the cloud over what is otherwise a mecca of Arabian horse showing.
Whew! Okay, that being said we were thrilled to see winners such as Apaladin in his thrilling Liberty Championshipthis horse can MOVE! If anyone ever questions whether show horses have fun, this definitely went a long way to answering.
Apaladin threw his big trot around the ring with great abandon and sheer joyeven performing a spectacular extended trot all by himself. This horse was doing it because it made him happy and because he can, simple as that. If the horse could grin he would have.
We were particularly impressed with the Signature Stallion Futurity classes with Amateur owners handling. The Horsefly LOVES to watch AO classesit is such a thrill for the owners to be out there with their horses doing it themselvesthey are truly an inspirationand what beautiful babies! Speaking of the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction, this year saw a record-setting total over $750,000 for some 140 lots of breedings to the top stallions in the world. Perhaps most exciting for us was lot #2, QR Marc, whose breeding went for a record $42,000. Horsefly Films’ own new QR Marc video played at the event just prior to the bidding and we are thrilled at everyone’s stellar response. You heard it herethis horse is the REAL DEAL. Go Marc!!
We also sat transfixed at Wendell Arena for the halter classes and yelled ourselves hoarse(fly) cheering our favorites onto victory, including Eden C who won Reserve Champion 3 year old Colt and Major Jamaal who took Reserve Champion 7 year old Stallion. These two horses are outstanding and we are so honored to have just filmed them both. (You can see both new videos of Eden and Major on our gallery page!) The Horsefly also gives a special shout out to Mike Wilson and the spectacular Stival (all we can say is WOW!) and to Kristi Waters whose KM Bugatti won Top Ten and showed his heart outdefinitely one to watch!
On the girls side of things, the incredible Donatella Versace won Half Arabian Supreme Champion and is quite simply the most beautiful, exotic half Arab we have ever laid eyes on. Period. Obviously Versace’s untimely recent death is a great loss but his sons and daughters carry on his greatness. The great ones never really leave us.
Besides the horses we met lots of wonderful people: Thanks Robert and Kenna Burbeck of K2 Arabians for a particularly terrific conversation with people who GET what we do and why it’s important to have exquisite video that makes your heart splash in your chest! And most especially thanks always to the entire Gallun gangyour entire show “family” are the most real, wonderful people and a testament to your integrity, dedication and spirit.
