As we wind down 2007, we’re chomping at the bit (eeewwww… hideously bad pun intended!) to see you all next year as the new show season begins—and we can’t wait to see all those precious babies in the spring! Nothing like a velvety foal muzzle to put everything in perspective, we say…

Wishing you Happy Holidays and a really FLY New Year!
Hello Everyone!

Thanks for all your terrific responses to our last (first!) newsletter. We really appreciate your support. We thought you might like to know some of the responses to last month’s poll “What’s your favorite horse film”. Lots of you mentioned “Seabiscuit” and one great answer said “The Man from Snowy River”—hadn’t seen that one in a while. Thanks for the reminder!

Having just returned from the U.S. Arabian Nationals in Albuquerque three weeks ago, it’s taken us longer than we would have liked to get this latest edition up. In addition to Nationals, it’s been an extremely busy time for us—just got back from filming the incredible Arabian stallion QR Marc in Florida before he flies off to his new life in Belgium. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime horse and we feel so very honored to have been chosen to film him!

2007 U.S. Arabian Nationals

Horsefly went to Albuquerque at the end of October for the U.S. Arabian Nationals. We saw so many amazing horses and got a chance to spend some quality time with some newly-crowned champions including National Champion Junior Mare Emandoria and National Champion Senior Stallion Pyro Thyme. Congratulations to all the wonderful champions and their human counterparts! For anyone who has ever been you know what an incredible show and spectacle this is—for those of you who haven’t been do yourself a favor and go next year. Alas, this was the end of an era for the Arabian world as the Nationals move next year to Tulsa Oklahoma after forty years trading off each year between Albuquerque and Louisville Kentucky.

To honor the past, the Arabian Horse Association decided to commemorate past Champions. Several past champions were presented in a very moving special evening ceremony before the last night of competition. Horses honored included Hucklebey Berry, the last son of Huckleberry Bey, and Gaishea, the only National Champion mare ever bred to a National Champion stallion (Gai Parada) to produce a National Champion Stallion (Gai Monarch).

The legendary 1985 National Champion Stallion, Strike, was asked to take part as the central star but, always looking out for the best interests of their horses, owners Greg and Nancy Gallun of Gallun Farms felt the trip would have been too hard on him. Instead, they opted to film him, along with his faithful friend and sidekick Jackson—a donkey with a larger-than-life attitude-- and Horsefly was beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to create a small homage to this wonderful, legendary horse.

Thank you Greg and Nancy for providing such a wonderful life to such an incredible horse and thank you for letting us share in giving him the honor he so richly deserves.

THIS MONTH’S LIST

We love making lists. Really. Not sure why but we do. It’s a Horsefly thing. SO without further ado, this month’s list is:

H O L I D A Y GIVING

Tis the Season and the Horsefly would like to remind everyone that charitable donations make a really thoughtful gift that help our equine less-fortunates. When making your list and checking it twice (we’ve been naughty too, it’s okay),  please consider some of our following favorite Horse Charities:

UNITED IN LIGHT

This is an incredible Draft Horse sanctuary (the only one dedicated solely to draft breeds!) in Livingston, Montana where draft breeds are rescued from slaughter or untimely death and brought to live out the rest of their lives in freedom and happiness.

RETURN TO FREEDOM

An amazing Mustang Sanctuary in California dedicated to protecting wild horses and allowing them to live out their lives as true wild creatures in their tightly-bonded family herd groups. Through sanctuary, education, and conservation, Return to Freedom protects the freedom, diversity and habitat of America’s wild horses for generations to come, thereby enriching the human spirit.

M O R E

There are many other extremely worthy horse charities out there including numerous great Thoroughbred rescue organizations like Reruns, CERF and the TRF. Go to Exracers.com to learn more about organizations all over the country dedicated to helping Thoroughbreds find new adoptive homes.

Whomever you decide to support, give all you can and give with joy!

Happy Holidays from the Horsefly!
