Beautiful Jim Key
List of the Month - Favorite films... What's yours?
We are gearing up for lots of National Shows this year so look for us at the Paso Fino Nationals in Georgia, Quarter Horse Congress in Colombus, Andalusian/Lusitano Nationals In Forth Worth and Arabian Nationals in Albuquerque.

See you at the shows!
Horsefly has been a busy bee lately! (Bad pun intended). We were a proud show sponsor at the Annual Fiesta of the Spanish Horse in Burbank in May. We love going to this spectacular show each year and filmed some gorgeous Spanish breeds while there. Check out our gallery page to see some of that footage.

Also in May we were thrilled to document the annual Equine Photography Workshop “Digital Artistry in Motion” by genius photographers April Visel and Sherron Sheppard. Click here to check out their incredible work. Our gallery page also features some wonderful footage from that week.

One of the photographers from the workshop, Kimerlee Curyl is mounting a wonderful exhibit - "Sprit & Freedom", featuring her equine photographs at  "A Studio Gallery" in Los Angeles, opening August 5th. Proceeds to benefit American Wild Horse Sanctuary. Check it out if you get the chance!

Sophie is off for the next three weeks to film at the North Pole (no horses this time, just polar bears, walruses—walri??—and lots of snow and ice). You can check out her incredible polar journey at sophiadia.com. Meanwhile Jen has been covering lots of horse shows and ranches for various magazines. Head over to Showtimepasofino.com or click here to check out her latest.

the horse! the horse!

"far, far back in our dark soul, the horse prances...the horse, the horse! The symbol of surging potency and power, of movement, of action..".

BEAUTIFUL JIM KEY

For those of you who don’t know the magnificent true story of Beautiful Jim Key, it is a glorious tale of a horse who rose to fame through teaching with kindness, a method mostly foreign to people in the late 19th century. Jim Key and his owner/trainer, self-taught vet and former slave Dr. William Key, were a testament of the bond between horse and human, eventually becoming ambassadors to the world on behalf of the Humane Society.

At the age of eight Jim knew his ABC's, days of the week and the flags of the world, could spell, make correct change on a cash register and do math with numbers up to 30. Jim famously won a spelling bee by besting a student with the word "physics." Known as the “Marvel of the Twentieth Century” Jim and Dr. Key were seen by over ten million Americans. Fans collected countless souvenirs and danced the “Beautiful Jim Key” two-step.

Until recently their story was lost but do yourself a huge favor and read the newly-published book “Beautiful Jim Key” by Mim Eichler Rivas which is now the basis of an accompanying documentary and feature motion picture. Those of us who are fortunate to spend our lives with horses know their extraordinary power to love and trust and teach us; to elevate us to the better angels of our nature.

Jim was foaled in 1889, so sickly that Dr. Key didn’t expect him to live. When Jim's dam died after he was born, he refused to be separated from the Doc, forcing Dr. Key to take the colt from the barn into his home. Thus began Jim’s education. In 1897, Dr. Key and Jim made their debut at the Nashville World’s Fair where President McKinley extolled Beautiful Jim Key is certainly the most astonishing and entertaining exhibition I have ever witnessed. It is indeed a grand object lesson of what kindness and patience will accomplish.”

Soon Beautiful Jim Key was a household name and the embodiment of the humane movement. They raised money and awareness for countless animal welfare groups, pioneered the creed “Be Kind to Animals” and the concept of humane education. 2 million children joined the Jim Key Band of Mercy and signed the Jim Key pledge, "I promise always to be kind to animals and other sentient beings."

Beautiful Jim Key and Dr. William Key retired after their record breaking 1906 season. Three years later, Doc passed away at age 76. Beautiful Jim Key followed in 1912. With a simple message of kindness, Beautiful Jim Key and Dr. William Key managed to change the world.

Go hug your horses. They are truly miraculous.

THIS MONTH’S LIST

We love making lists. Really. Not sure why but we do. It’s a Horsefly thing. SO without further ado, this month’s list is:

OUR FAVORITE HORSE FILMS

The Electric Horseman
The Horsefly’s personal fave. Robert Redford and a big beautiful bay Thoroughbred named Rising Star. Did we mention Robert Redford? ‘Nuff said. Although we thought you’d like to know that Sophie rode a horse in a full suit of electric lights at Jen’s wedding. Really. We have photos to prove it and everything.

Hidalgo
Cry every damn time they set the horses free at the end. Saw this horse in person in front of the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Boulevard the week of the premiere. He was a real sweetheart and the loudest paint we’ve ever seen!

The Horse Whisperer
Again with the Redford although much older. Still fabulous. What is it about this guy and horses?

What’s your favorite horse film? Drop us a line and tell us!

We'll publish the results in the next newsletter.

To be honest, we think that some of the best horse films include your horses. Check out our gallery page, and vote for your favorite horsefly films film too. If you like.
